Chicago Crime Scene Clean Up

Meth Lab Decon

The labs created for the production of methamphetamine do more than just produce a horrible drug they also produce waste. This waste is known to contain many different chemicals all of which are extremely hazardous to you and your loved ones. We are sure you have noticed the TV campaigns talking about the dangers of a meth lab to a small child’s health. We can assure you this is no exaggeration; effects of a meth lab can be felt years after the lab has been removed if the property is not properly decontaminated.

Meth can be made using many different chemical processes. Most of these include the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), explosives, acids, bases, metals and chemical salts. Many steps are involved in making meth, and other harmful chemicals can be formed during the process. As a result, hundreds of different chemicals can contribute to the contamination of a property and its contents. Some materials in a building can absorb these chemicals, including carpeting, wall board, ceiling tile, wood and fabric. If residues enter the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system, other areas in a building can become contaminated. Soil or groundwater may become contaminated if chemicals are disposed of in a septic system or dumped outside.

Exposure to meth residues may cause symptoms similar to those experienced by meth users. Exposure to VOCs may cause symptoms such as nose and throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion and breathing difficulties. Acids or bases will cause a burning sensation on the skin and in mucous membranes, and can cause severe eye damage. Exposure to metals and salts can cause a wide range of health problems including respiratory irritation, decreased mental function, anemia, kidney damage and birth defects. Lead and mercury are particularly hazardous. You can find more information on the Illinois Department of Public Health’s website: www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/factsheets/meth-labs.htm
